Looking for the best places to visit in September? This is the perfect month to travel if you want to skip the summer crowds or extreme heat, and find new bucket list places to explore.

Depending on where you go, the fall harvest starts to pick up in September. Plus, with school back in session in most places, it’s the first month of the year to enjoy shoulder season savings.
Just keep in mind that September is still rainy season in some places, so it’s important to check weather reports and avoid tropical hurricanes.
If lower costs, more elbow room, and milder weather sound like the start of a dream vacation, keep scrolling! Here is my list of the best places to visit in September in the USA and across the globe.
Places to Vacation in September in the US
Here are some of the best places to visit in September in the United States
1. Vermont
After a hot summer, Vermont is one of the best places to visit in September. Enjoy the shifting seasons when temperatures start to drop. Nights in New England can easily reach into the 40s and 50s by mid-September. So, it’s a great time to break out your favorite fall attire and layer up!
Vermont is probably best known for its amazing fall foliage. While peak season is usually mid-October, you can enjoy shades of gold and bronze a little earlier by going north.
Head to Burlington for the weekend, which is about an hour south of the Canadian border. Take a beer tour and enjoy the crisp autumn air as you tour around the city.
September offers great opportunities for outdoor activities like autumn hiking and camping. The days are getting shorter but still allow for plenty of time to hit the trails. Plus, you can still enjoy water activities like canoeing and boat tours during this month.

2. Maine
Maine is on my list of the best places to visit in the USA in September because of all the things you can still do after the summer!
As the shoulder season in New England, you can still enjoy warm days and open tourist attractions. Try all the lobster rolls (if you eat shellfish), do some whale watching, or explore island villages.
Plus, September is the start of the fall fair season in Maine! Check out the Salmon Festival in Eastport or the Oxford County Fair in Oxford.
Maine is also one of the best places to go leaf peeping in September. Head to Acadia National Park for its abundant fall foliage. Enjoy an autumnal day hike or go for a scenic drive along the Acadia Park Loop which winds through the park.
3. The Badlands, South Dakota
If Badlands National Park is on your bucket list, consider a trip in September — that’s when I went as part of a longer road trip.
You can enjoy balmy days (though colder nights). Just go before temperatures drop at the end of the month.
September/October is your last chance in the year to go camping in the park. There are two established campgrounds, one via reservation and one FF walk-in (which are all camping terms we go over in my Get Outdoors course for beginners, if you are new to camping).
If you’re looking to save money on entrance fees, spend the day at the park on National Public Lands Day. This free entrance day at the park falls on September 24 every year.

4. Virginia
The vast state of Virginia offers everything from beaches to mountains. In September, the heat and humidity are beginning to leave the coast.
Explore First Landing State Park with accessible walking paths, educational and historical markers, as well as canoe rentals. Or take a walk on the spooky side with a ghost tour.
More inland, September means mild weather and sunny days for a visit to Shenandoah National Park. This section of the Blue Ridge Mountains is already turning golden in September!
Go leaf peeping with a scenic cruise along Skyline Drive or enjoy a hike to one of the many stunning waterfalls in the park.
5. The Berkshires, MA
There’s something for everyone in the Berkshires, and not just in the summer. It’s a rural, mountainous region of Massachusetts that’s full of history and culture.
September gives you the perfect weather for a fall hike around Mount Greylock State Reservation. Hike to the summit and take in the expansive views. They’re stunning, with vibrant colors of fall starting to creep into the landscape.
Head to Hilltop Orchards in September, when their apple and grape harvest is in full swing! You can go apple picking or check out the orchard’s own Furnace Brook Winery.
When you’ve had your fill of fall foods, the Berkshires is also home to all kinds of art and history museums as well. And if you want to take advantage of their wellness retreats, I mention some nearby in my Wellness Getaway Guide (Northeast edition).
6. Chicago
A trip to Chicago in September gives you comfortable days to explore everything the city has to offer. With school back in session and folks heading back to work, Chicago is yours to explore!
I suggest bringing layers because temperatures can change quickly from hot to chilly, especially along the water.
Then you’ll be prepared for adventures like an architectural river cruise on the Chicago River, or taking advantage of your last chance to see the Cubs playing the season at Wrigley Field!
You can take a stroll along the riverwalk or down the Lakefront Trail along Lake Michigan, visit the famous “bean”, and luxuriate at a fancy hotel like the Viceroy.

7. The Bay Area
Consider a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area if you like variety. It’s truly one of the best places to visit in September when the Bay benefits from a few weeks of “Second Summer.”
Spend some time exploring San Francisco, or head outside of the city for some outdoor adventures.
You’ll find the Big Basin Redwood State Park, a popular spot for mountain biking, hiking, and scenic highways. Or head to Napa and Sonoma at the northern end of the bay.
September means crush season in wine country. It’s the perfect time to visit the vineyards when they’re full of ripe grapes and changing leaves!
8. Finger Lakes
Between Rochester and Syracuse, NY is the Finger Lakes region. In September, this part of upstate New York is still experiencing comfortable, sunny days.
You might see the trees starting to shift a bit, but the colors won’t really explode until mid-October. The weather is perfect for a day out at Watkins Glen State Park. You’ll love the cliffside trails and breathtaking waterfalls.
With over 100 vineyards in the region, I highly recommend booking a wine tasting or heading to the Naples Grape Fest.
Don’t forget the Corning Museum of Glass starts its glass pumpkin-blowing events in September, too.

9. Canada
Without a doubt, one of the best places to travel in September is Canada! The humidity of summer is gone and the days are getting much cooler. If you’re looking for fall foliage, Canada is the perfect place to find it.
Spend some time in Ontario and take a day trip to Niagara Falls. Visit Toronto, or head to the charming city of Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
There, you can enjoy the fall foliage in the Butchart Gardens. Or go whale watching around Vancouver — a great option til October!

10. Switzerland
If you’ve never considered Switzerland to be a fall destination, you should!
It’s quieter because all the visitors have left for the summer season (and it’s not quite ski season yet). You can still enjoy warm sunny days, though you should prepare for the weather to be a little unpredictable.
For a unique experience, hike the acres of terraced vineyards reaching down to the northern shore of Lake Geneva.
With the grape harvest in September, the vines turn bright red and orange. So, even if the grapes have been harvested, you can enjoy a beautiful walk.
You could also head to Bad Ragaz, famous for its natural hot springs. Warm up in thermal pools or stay at one of the health spa resorts in the area.
11. Norway
Another of the best places to visit in September is the country Norway. With the weather in the 40s and 50s, you can spend your days outdoors and enjoy warming up by the fire at night.
Take a memorable hike along the Norwegian fjords or take a day trip to see them!
The shorter days of September make it an ideal time to start checking out the Northern Lights, too. If you have time, this month is also a good time to go whale watching in Tromsø.

12. England
In September, you can enjoy warm, drier days in England, before the cold rainy season moves in! You might be headed to the countryside or staying in London. Either way, you can enjoy fewer fellow tourists during this quieter month.
England is stunning in September with trees in bright fall colors.
One of the best ways to take it all in is to visit Stourhead Estate in Warminster (if it is in your budget I highly recommend in buying a National Trust pass to visit as many heritage sites as possible.)
Visit the charming city of Bath and tour the Roman baths there; visit the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, and Avebury; or enjoy a bike tour around London or go horseback riding through Kent Downs.
13. Scotland
After a warm summer, September in Scotland can become overcast and rainy but you can still luck out with great weather – I did!
With the Fringe Festival having just ended, major cities like Edinburgh will have fewer crowds and more options available for affordable accommodation.
Head over to Glasgow and spend some time exploring the many art galleries, shopping centers, and museums, or channel your inner Harry Potter walking the streets of Edinburgh.
For gorgeous fall foliage, head to the country. I suggest hiking in Trossachs National Park. You can enjoy stunning views of lakes with changing leaves and rolling hills in the background! If hiking isn’t on your list, take an organized tour of some of Scotland’s most famous locations.

14. Italy
Italy in September is always a good idea! You can still enjoy warm days in September, but it’s not so stifling. Plus, the nights cool down, which is perfect for a night out in Rome.
Head to the Amalfi Coast and explore the coastal villages. If you’re worried about how to get there, you can even take a day tour from Rome.
Enjoy long walks through town or, if you go earlier in the month, a few beach days! On cooler days, you can hike the Valle delle Ferriere, a local nature reserve.
In September, Italy’s busy harvest season begins. In Tuscany, it’s not just about wine. Take advantage of the mushrooms, truffles, chestnuts, olives, and more. You can even spend the day truffle hunting with a local guide and her truffle-sniffing dog when you’re not exploring Florence!
15. Morocco
Much like in Italy, September in Morocco is still the high season, but it’s not quite as crowded. With warm days and cool nights, you’ll be more comfortable exploring the sites.
September also launches the festival season in some regions! Head to the coastal city of Tangier for the TanJazz music festival. I added Tangier to a larger Casablanca-Marrakech-Sahara-Fez-Chefchaouen itinerary when I visited.
I also loved visiting the mountains to see Chefchaouen, Morocco’s blue city. You won’t want to miss the magical blue-washed walls and cobblestone streets. You can visit Meknes and Chefchaouen on this 3-Day tour.
