One of the only ways to convince me to go on a winter destination vacation is if the mountain towns are absolutely adorable, the restaurants are mouthwatering, and the scenery is breathtaking. Add on cozy, lush accommodations to escape the cold with a fireplace and hot tub (or nearby amazing hot springs) and you’ve got yourself a deal!

Wondering where to go for a winter getaway in the United States and wishing for a destination that is gorgeous and picturesque?

I’ve enlisted the help of fellow travel experts to compile a charming list of the best mountain towns in the US — that just may help you actually enjoy winter! (Give it a shot… if you’re still not convinced after reading, you can always just escape to these warm winter vacations in the US instead.)

Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth in Washington State is one of the most adorable mountain towns you’ll come across in the country. Nestled in the Cascade Mountain range, Hannah from That Adventurer says this small town feels like you’ve just stepped into a Hallmark movie!

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-style village, just a few hour’s drive away from Seattle, is complete with sauerkraut, beer & bratwurst.

The buildings look Alpine with wooden balconies and cute window shutters. People dress in dirndl and lederhosen and as you wander the streets you’ll be greeted by the smell of Gluhwein and the sight of over 500,000 twinkling lights. The lights stay on from December until Valentine’s Day so there’s plenty of time to see them.

Besides the village, you can enjoy sleigh rides, skiing and tubing, browse the Christmas market stalls, or stock up on gingerbread gifts from the Gingerbread Factory.

Estes Park, Colorado

Set just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, the adorable small town of Estes Park, Colorado is known for its outdoor scenery, charming downtown, and the infamous Stanley Hotel.

The iconic luxury hotel is a must-see: standing high above the town, this beautiful property was the inspiration behind Stephen King’s The Shining, as well as the film location of the movie adaption.

It’s definitely worth checking out even if you’re not checking in; day visitors are welcome on the grounds and in the hotel lobby.

While you’re there, Kate Storm of Our Escape Clause recommends you check out the downtown boutiques, selling everything from fudge to Christmas ornaments in an idyllic setting, and to stroll along the beautiful riverwalk.

Tours near Estes Park:

Of course, no trip to Estes Park is complete without a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the best places to visit in the USA! Hikers will love the wide variety of trails available, but even non-hikers will find plenty of gorgeous scenery.

Check out Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, and Alberta Falls if you are in the mood for epic views without needing to lace up your hiking boots.

Where to stay in Estes Park:

Ketchum, Idaho

The former mining and ranching town of Ketchum, Idaho is a sweet Rocky Mountain getaway at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet — and one that Ernest Hemingway himself enjoyed visiting!

If you are a fan of star gazing, this area is a designated Dark Sky Community and is included in the country’s first International Dark Sky Reserve.

Purple snow, purple snow

Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride along snowy hills, or stroll through the authentic mountain town’s offering of restaurants, breweries, shopping, and arts and culture activities.

If you are here for seasonal outdoor recreation, you’re right at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area for plenty of adventure! For skiers and snowboarders heading to the slopes, you have Bald and Dollar Mountain to explore. Use Sun Valley ski rental if you want delivery included.

Where to stay in Ketchum:

Lake Placid, New York

There are so many gorgeous destinations to visit throughout New York’s Adirondack mountains, and Lake Placid is at the top of that list! Enjoy the Northway’s scenic drive on the journey to this Olympic Village and fall in love with the charming mountain town’s wintry scenery.

Lake Placid is brimming with small shops, peaks and trails, yummy restaurants, and is also home to the best spa in the Adirondacks: The Spa at Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa. During the winter, join the Lake Placid Village Holiday Stroll, or even channel your inner Cool Runnings with a bobsledding experience.

Telluride, Colorado

Colorado is home to gorgeous mountain towns that attract visitors from all over the world. One of them is Telluride: a cozy hamlet tucked in the box canyon, in the heart of the San Juan Mountains.

Even if you don’t love winter, Telluride will steal your heart. Unlike other ski resorts where you will find plenty of commercial chains and mega-resorts, this small town boasts a one-of-a-kind atmosphere with local restaurants and stores in a remote location.

Daria from The Discovery Nut notes that because of its hours-long distance from the nearest major airport in Denver, and its regional airport’s less common flights, Telluride is not easy to get to. The bright side: this helps keep crowds at bay!

Those who get to experience Telluride in winter enjoy less crowded ski slopes, Victorian downtown, ice climbing, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado. Even if you don’t ski, don’t forget to take the FREE gondola to Mountain Village above Telluride. Here, you can enjoy grand views, try delicious food, and enjoy the beautiful setting.

Park City, Utah

Park City, Utah is tucked in the mountains, just outside of Salt Lake City, with much to offer. The lively Main Street in downtown Park City is full of cozy dining options, bars, and local shops, and for those on the more adventurous side, the Park City Mountain Resort has some of the best skiing in the United States.

Near the Idaho border, you can find Jackson Hole, WY nestled in a large valley between the Gros Ventre and Teton Mountain ranges. The western Wyoming mountain resort is undoubtedly one of America’s most charming towns.

The idyllic town square lined with world-class restaurants and an alluring combination of luxe boutiques and adorable home stores is a haven for even non-skiers. Paul & Nicki from The Two That Do suggest you spend a wintry afternoon or evening at one of the town’s many restaurants in front of an alluring open fire. The only worry you’ll have is which of the many menus based on local ingredients to choose from.

For an unforgettable experience, wrap up warm and book a winter sleigh ride through the nearby Elk refuge, home to the world’s largest wild elk herd.

Helen, Georgia

Believe it or not, you’ll find a replica Bavarian alpine village called Helen right in the north Georgia mountains! Known for its Oktoberfest celebration in the fall, this town is picturesque and extra special in the winter (when it is beautifully decorated for the holidays)!

You’ll fall in love with the European architecture and the gorgeous North Georgia Mountains all while listening to local music or perusing small shops.

Since this is the South, you likely won’t see any snow, but it can get chilly making warm hot cocoa or cider the perfect treat. When you’re not joining a Helen + Dahlonega tour to explore the sights, Alanna Koritzke from Periodic Adventures recommends you try a German stew at Bodensee Restaurant or grab a pretzel with hot beer cheese dip.

You can even try traditional Glühwein, a German winter beverage made from red wine and spices like cinnamon, cloves, and aniseed. Find it at Hofer’s of Helen, a bakery and café.

Vail, Colorado

Vail is one of the prettiest winter towns in Colorado. It’s the perfect place for first-time skiers, hot chocolate lovers, and fireplace smugglers. After you visit Vail, you might even start to like winter. 😉

Vail’s downtown is quaint and cozy. It’s lined with art galleries, boutique shops, and high-end restaurants. You can find a small ice rink downtown and fire pit nearby to relax and get warm. Downtown is always decorated with twinkling lights and gigantic ice sculptures.

Valentina from Valentina’s Destinations recommends riding the gondola up the mountain (free for all guests after 3PM) for scenic views. Other fun activities include dog-sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Try this in Vail:

If staying inside is your thing, Valentina suggests you book a spa day at one at one of the 5-star hotels downtown. Every year, the Four Seasons does a special holiday-themed art installation with a Grinch theme.
